Why I Love Winter Snapshot Sessions

There’s something so magical about winter that makes me love offering snapshot sessions this time of year. From the glittering snow-covered landscapes to the soft, natural light that makes skin tones glow, winter provides a breathtaking backdrop that’s unlike any other season. While many families hesitate due to the cold or uncertainty about what to wear, I’ve found that these shorter, 30-minute sessions at a reduced rate are the perfect way to capture the beauty of winter without spending too long in the chilly air.

I offer these sessions during the first week of December and then again from January 15th to February 28th—the coldest months of the year. Most families understandably prefer not to spend hours outside in freezing temperatures, but I believe every family deserves some gorgeous winter wonderland photos.

The Unique Beauty of Winter

One of my favorite things about winter photography is how the snow acts as a natural reflector, creating stunning, even light. It gives photos a dreamy, ethereal quality and enhances skin tones beautifully. The soft, muted colors of a snowy backdrop also make the subjects of the photo—your family—really stand out.

Another reason I love these sessions is that they break away from the norm. Everyone seems to gravitate toward fall with its warm hues or summer with its sunny vibes, but winter offers something entirely unique. There’s a clean, serene elegance to snow-covered landscapes that’s hard to replicate. It’s a chance to create portraits that feel truly special and different.

Adding Winter Magic to Your Home

I love decorating my home seasonally, and winter family portraits play a big role in that. Before the Christmas decorations go up, I enjoy displaying canvasses of our family in the snow. It adds a cozy, heartwarming feel to our home and reminds me of the joy we shared in those moments. I think it’s a lovely way to embrace the season and make your space feel extra special.

Why Winter Photos Are Worth It

Families often worry about the cold or what to wear, but these sessions are designed to make it simple. The short 30-minute format is just long enough to capture sweet, candid moments without anyone getting too chilly. Plus, winter clothing—cozy knits, scarves, boots, and mittens—adds so much charm to photos. For anyone unsure about outfits, I’m always happy to help with suggestions :)

There’s also something incredibly genuine about winter photos. Snowball fights, warm hugs, and laughter in the frosty air bring out such authentic, joyful expressions. These aren’t just posed pictures—they’re moments of connection and love!

Winter may be cold, but it’s also magical. It’s a season of coziness, beauty, and togetherness, and I love giving families the opportunity to capture that through these snapshot sessions.
