Winter Family photos in fairmont hot springs, BC
I know winter isn’t everyone’s favourite—especially when it comes to photoshoots. Sure, the snow-covered peaks and frosted trees look stunning, but the thought of stepping out of cozy snow pants or ski jackets? Instant shivers!
Here in the mountains, most of us rely on functional winter clothes, which makes picking an outfit for photos feel tricky. But here’s the thing: your outfit choice can make all the difference. It can turn a good photo into a great one—something you’ll want to print and hang on your wall instead of letting it get lost in your camera roll.
The secret? COLOURS. And I’m here to share some tips and tricks to help you nail your winter session look :)

Cremes: The Warm Touch of Elegance
If you’re after a timeless and classy look, cremes are the way to go. Tones like light white, creme, and beige pair beautifully with jeans and add a soft, natural feel to your photos. These colors are neutral, versatile, and perfectly complement the winter wonderland scenery we often aim to capture. Plus, they add a subtle warmth to your images, which is especially nice if you want a cozy vibe. If you prefer your photos with a warmer tone, cremes might just be the perfect match for you.

Earth Tones: Greens, Browns, and All Things Natural
Muted greens and browns are my go-to recommendation for families who love a natural, grounded aesthetic. These earth tones are wonderfully neutral and add just the right amount of warmth without overpowering the scenery. In winter settings, they’re especially striking, as they create a lovely contrast against the snow without clashing with the serene backdrop. They’re understated yet impactful, making them a safe and stylish choice.

Blacks and Greys: Timeless Classics
You can never go wrong with blacks and greys. These timeless shades create a striking contrast against snowy landscapes, drawing attention to your family while enhancing the cool blues in the environment. Black adds drama and sophistication, while greys bring balance and subtlety. One thing to keep in mind, though: tiny falling snowflakes can show up on black clothing when images are enlarged, looking like little dust spots. But overall, these colors are sleek, modern, and perfect for a classic winter photo.

Mixed Bright Colours: Coordinated and Eye-Catching
If bold and vibrant is more your style, go for it! Bright colors can work beautifully in winter photos, but the key is coordination. Choose one primary color for your family and build your outfits around it. For example, if you choose red, try incorporating shades like burgundy or maroon into your outfits to tie everything together. Too many unrelated colors can feel distracting and make your photos look more like a casual smartphone snapshot rather than a polished family portrait. Simplicity and coordination are your best friends when it comes to bright hues.
